Relay Guide

How to Make Sure Your Team is Correctly Registered

To expedite packet pick up, please have your entire team registered by November 1st.

There are two relay events – a 5-person full marathon relay and a 3-person half marathon relay.

The team captain will register themself for a Relay event and Create a New Team. (This person will also pay the registration fee for the entire team). The remaining team members should register themselves for the relay and select Join an Existing Team.

Packet Pick up at Expo

The team captain MUST pick up the team packet at the dedicated Relay booth on Friday, November 3, 2023. Expo hours are 10 am to 7 pm.

There is NO packet pick up the day of the race.

Timing Tag

Included in your relay packet is a timing tag.  The person running the initial leg (start) of the race should be the first person carrying the timing tag.  Once the active runner reaches the exchange zone, the tag should be transferred to the next active runner, who will then run with it for their leg of the race.  This process will repeat for each leg of the race.

The timing tag MUST be turned in at the finish line prior to receiving relay finisher medals. Please place your timing tag in the bucket to the left of the finish line near the timing tent – look for the green sign!

Time Limit

The course limit is 6 hours for the full marathon and 3 hours for the half marathon.  Runners who are outside of this limit will be asked to move to the sidewalk.  Please note – runners with a total time of over six hours may not receive an official time.

Relay Rendevous at Finish

Once you’re done with your leg of the race, be sure to head back to the Relay Rendezvous, located at the corner of MLK and Graham Street.  You’ll be able to pick up your commemorative Novant Health Charlotte Marathon Relay baton (quantities are limited).

The relay rendezvous will allow access to the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon Finish Festival where you can enjoy snacks and entertainment until it’s time to meet up with your group back at the rendezvous point. Once your team is together, you can run the last 400M to the finish line together.

Relay Exchange Zone Information

Please allow plenty of time to get to your relay exchange zone.

Exchange Zone Procedures

Runners should stay off the road (and people’s yards) until they hear their bib number called by the relay support volunteers.  We will have people stationed ahead of the exchange zone with walkies who will radio ahead relay bib numbers as runners approach.  When your number is called, please be in a position to receive the timing tag from your teammate.

Make sure your relay team has a good idea of pacing for each relay leg.  Streets will be difficult to navigate due to race closures, but you should be able to navigate to each exchange zone with time to spare. On the maps below, the Green circle with the white star indicates the Relay Exchange Zone location.
