The 2020 Novant Health Charlotte Marathon is going virtual this year, so let’s have some fun with it! Here are answers from our first Q and A session about the events’ move to virtual.

  • Can I still register for the 2020 Novant Health Charlotte Marathon? YES! All of the 2020 events are virtual, and registration is still open for the marathon, half marathon, 5k, and marathon relay.

  • What are my options if I’m already registered for one of the 2020 Novant Health Charlotte Marathon events? First of all— thank you! If you’re already in, you’ve got three options: 1. Run virtually with us this year, 2. Defer your registration to 2021 at no charge, or 3. Donate your registration fee to Novant Health’s Hemby Children’s Hospital. You can manage these options yourself through your RunSignup login.

  • If I deferred once from a previous year, can I defer again? Yes! You can defer to 2021 at no charge. Just log into your RunSignup account to make it happen!

  • How will this event be timed? Your Garmin, a sundial, even a calendar— more on that later! And while there won’t be any official timing system set up, we are working with some timing partners to decide the best way to track, share, and compare results. We’ll publish the final answer here.

  • Will there be any water stations set up around Charlotte for the day of the race?  We won’t be setting up water stations on any course. Our recommendation is to BYO, or you can use the RunCharlotte Fountain Map to plan for water along your very own course!

  • Will the course still be shared with the runners if we want to run that route? Yes, the courses are published and available on the marathon website. However, keep in mind they will NOT be coned or marked, and there will be no traffic control along the route.

  • If we do the run virtual, will we still get the shirt and the medal? Yes! In fact, we’ll have a unique tee and medal design exclusively for these virtual events. Even bibs!

  • If I sign up for the virtual marathon this November will the medals still be the connecting one? Not this year. We’re going to take a break from that series this year and incorporate a unique medal design for all 2020 events.

  • Will there be packet pickup? We are planning on a packet pick across several days and locations. We’ll post details here once they’re finalized, and all registrants will get that information through their runner instructions.

  • What will the accountability procedure be to “prove” we ran the distance? You’re on the honor system this year. There’s no prize purse, so no one’s running for the money. Unless you made a wager with your friends, but that’s on you. Strava dopers, do your thing, but that’s not really the spirit of the event.

  • Will time limits still be put in place? Sort of, but they’re REALLY generous! We’re opening the completion window from November 6 to November 22, 2020. Do your marathon, half marathon, or 5k in one day, or spread it out over the course of more than two (2) weeks!

  • Will there be medals? If so, how and when will they be received? The plan is to do packet for medals, tees, swag etc., all at once.

  • How about a nice shirt that has the CLT skyline on the front? We know, we know. We’re proud of our hometown, too. And if you have ideas or concepts for tees, send ‘em in to ed@runcharlotte.com by September 8th.

  • How about random prize drawings since there won’t be any awards? We love the idea of random prize drawings! We’re going to do our homework on this, for sure. We’re working to make as much lemonade out of these lemons as possible.

  • Is there a deadline for medal and t-shirt ideas? Get ‘em in fast! Like before Labor day, if you can. There are production deadlines we’re working against. Send them to ed@runcharlotte.com

  • What about the Marathon Relay? Is that still happening, too? Yes, it’s still and event you can do virtually, too! Teams of 5 can break it up however they want. Just have fun with it! If there’s ever a year to take it less seriously, this is it!

  • Is there a nonprofit or charity tied to the marathon? You bet! We’re proud to partner with the Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital. Over the last few years, we’ve been able to contribute more than $200,000 to Hemby Children’s Hospital thanks to your participation in the marathon.

  • Will there be mile markers to help me stay on course? We won’t post formal mile markers on the roads, but mile markers are listed on our published maps. And again, the official course will NOT be coned, marked, or closed to traffic. If that’s the route you choose to run, then you take full responsibility for yourself and your actions.

  • What about flexibility in start and finish time? Yes! We’re essentially opening the completion window from November 6 to November 22, 2020. Do your marathon, half marathon, or 5k in one day, or spread it out over the course of more than two (2) weeks! This is YOUR virtual race— do it how and when you want!

  • Got more questions or ideas to make this the BEST EVER virtual event? Send them our way to ed@runcharlotte.com

As we get more questions that benefit the group, we’ll add them here. We look forward to sharing this experience with you come November!
